MTN Heathens

For the third time in a decade the MTN sponsored Heathens bear true flagship at the Club with an assurance of a shelf replete with all the 2009 rugby seasons trophies. Certainly setting up a gloating mood for former Chairman Ian Walker and all other Kyadondo diehards; and presents an almost didactic sense for the other teams going by the penchant and manner of the Heathens dominance this year; the discipline, courage, skill, hard work and winning. A true show of athletic excellence that elicits a doting mood for the Club. Indeed the fat lady has started singing again.

From where the Club is set by the high-speed bustling Kampala-Jinja highway, a 2.83 ha. expanse of refreshing verdure in the city protected by Fort Jerry along the road; it provides the ultimate nook for not only athletic experience but also social repertoire.

Conceptualised ten years ago, as a way to roll out rugby in the city and decongest the team crammed Kampala Rugby Club across the road, founders Ian Walker and Jerry Burley were attracted to this, then, marshy, piece of bushy mosquito and thug infested patch; that was a neglected football ground and popular for the wrong reasons. What they actually envisioned is the current impeccable turf that bears all the rugby battles and provides home for the MTN Heathens, Toyota Buffaloes, Saracens, Thunderbirds, Panthers and Balenzi development project; it is perhaps, the best rugby turf in the country today.

This Club provides an intriguing history of a club with direct links to the foundation of rugby football with a moving record of dedication and commitment from members who played from the earlier re-vamps of the game in the 1980s and 90s. It affirms our view of the important role sport has to play in society and captures the spirit of what it means to be a committed club member.

The Heathens team was formed in 1999, and was one of the foundation members of rugby in Uganda, along with Kobs, Impis, Nile, Pirates and Rhinos when the Uganda Rugby Union joined the IRB in 1997. It forms the senior playing section of the Club. This side has had an impressive collection of trophies and accolades over the years with 6 leagues titles, 7 Uganda Cups, 8 sevens championships and 5 Makerere tens trophies and won the only Super Cup played recently. This includes a clean sweep of whatever there was to win in 2002, 2004 and 2009; the only Ugandan team to achieve this feat so far.

The club has a very strong junior section, qualifying the Buffaloes team in the Super 8 league competition for four seasons now and the Saracens playing in the Shield, second division.
