Kyadondo RFC Hold Annual Awards Dinner

6/9/2010

Kyadondo RFC held their annual dinner on Saturday the 12th December 2009. Players and team management were recognised for outstanding performances through out the year.Kyadondo RFC is also a popular night spot for social gatherings but on this day it was closed for members, sponsors, players and invited guests. The sound system was generously donated by Platinum DJ's whose CEO Mr Tolbert Onyango 'Omolo' is a member of Kyadondo RFC and was present in person.

In attendance were sponsors from Toyota,KK Security,URU President William Blick,Development Manager Ramsey Olinga and various club Chairmen. The opening speech came from Kyadondo RFC Chairman Mr Jonathan Kamukama who thanked the sponsors, players and all Kyandondo based clubs for the effort put in through out the year.KK security was introduced as new sponsors of shield side 'Saracens' who will now be called 'Lions'.Many of the Saracens players graduated from tag rugby to full contact and as they progressed to Super 8 sides like MTN Heathens they became Rugby Cranes Internationals, names like Benon Kizza and Jude Kerrumundu spring to mind.

Speeches

URU president Mr William Blick thanked and applauded Kyandondo RFC's achievements,in particular MTN Heathens 5 trophy haul in their third grand slam season.Heathens are the only team to achieve such a feat in Ugandan rugby history. The URU president also announced a fully sponsored trip courtesy of Kampala coach for MTN Heathens to go and tour Kenya during the pre-season early next year.He also announced an invitation from the Llanelli Scarlets of Wales to the Rugby Cranes for a tour at a yet to be confirmed date. This is part of an memorandum of understanding signed between URU and WRU.

The final speech and key note one at that was a humorous rendition by Kyandondo RFC club legend and life member Glyn Cartmel that took the audience through almost 2 decades of his experiences as a player with Heathens.Amidst all the laughter Glyn Cartmel spared a thought from the threat posed by the corporate vultures who are buying up all the rugby grounds in the city center.Kyadondo RFC has been under serious threat from investors who seem to have the city council singing to their tunes.Every effort must be made to preserve Kyandondo RFC grounds and it is our prayer the lease extension will be granted.

Awards

The sumptuous dinner was a delicacy with the expected mountains of food on platter from the ruggers. The Master of Ceremonies David Mutaka steered the proceedings expertly with his mastery of the Queens English and the art of humour particularly directed at players receiving various awards.Heathens players were honoured with momentous for their record breaking season with Benon Kizza being named MVP.Toyota Buffaloes MVP award went to Raymond Monye;Saracens MVP-Alfred Bijik;Thunderbirds MVP was Harriet Kayonjo and Rangers MVP was named Swallah Mohammed.Spirit of the club award for selfless contribution to the club went to Heathens Team Manager Jude Okello'Kamwufu' whom we can now strip of the title 'club hooligan'.Any ideas for the replacement club hooligan?

After Party

After the awards the dance floor was opened with many of the Saracens and Buffaloes youngsters choosing to show hit the floor sorry turf while the others rushed to the club house bar to merry make. Please do visit our album page to see the pictures of the dinner.
